Ants are capable of looking in a mirror, deducing that they have stuff on them, and cleaning it off. Does this mean that they're "conscious"? No, it means that they are capable of looking in a mirror, deducing that they have stuff on them, and cleaning it off. This doesn't mean that the ant looks in the mirror and says
>Ah yes, my ocular sensors detech contamination on MY PERSON, and I have a sense of self, this bundle of stuff that I call I, is dirty, I must cleanIt just means that when dirty, they clean, and that an individual ant is capable of visually determining that it is dirty. One theory is that ants simply have a cleaning reflex, and when they see an ant, they clean it, and they are capable of understanding reflection (perhaps because they can smell the contaminant on themselves and not on the reflection).
There is no evidence, however, to suggest that any being on Earth receives some form of mental phenomena from some outside source akin to how a radio picks up radio waves. Absolutely none. If we put you in a totally sealed lead room, you'd still be able to think just fine.
