I just finished my masters in geology at 23. What will do more for me by the time I turn 30: a second bachelors degree in civil engineering or an MBA?

I’ve already kind of resolved I want both since I refuse to be pigeonholed as a geologist and I want both professional licenses. I also want to make 200k+ and that’s not possible with either of those bachelors degrees. My only hope would be to move on to management.

Sorry if this isn’t science related. I just hate asking leddit for career advice.

An MBA is literally a management degree. If you get a good one, you will never do any labor in your life. My suggestion to you is to work for 1-2 years and then go for an MBA.

I want to reach upper management at a civil engineering firm. At all of the ones I’ve looked at, the executives were engineers despite the companies hiring tons of geologists.

Are you seriously going to delay your life another 4 years just to have a 0.00001% chance of getting an executive position? Not only that but what you observe is not a rule. You do not need any engineering knowledge to be a good executive. All you need is business instinct and you can build that up in many ways. If you were a superior candidate then trust me that you would not be disqualified just because you don't have the right BS (pro tip: after your first job, your BS literally has no value anymore. Now you are not recognized by your degree but by your previous job).

I’m only about 40 credits away if I choose the right school. I looked into it and I’d only be required to do 5 classes in person at one uni in my area. Really wouldn’t be that much more work since I already have a degree. Would also make me way more employable. I would do this assuming I can work at the same time, so I wouldn’t be delaying anything.

It's a serious concern. You are joining the work-force in the middle of an economic downturn. This means that companies are looking to save money, specially in hiring practices. In my own department I've already seen that 3 vacant positions were filled with really shitty applicants just because they were cheap. For you this means that you want your perceived value in the market to be as low as possible. You want to seem as uneducated as possible while at the same time having the bare minimum knowledge and experience to get the job. Because your future employer is already planning to underpay you, but underpaying a guy with a masters degree will cause resentment while underpaying some random dude who barely finished his community college degree with C's will make him super happy and feeling lucky that he got the job.

This is why I say that if you can get a job then yeah, do as many other degrees as you want. Because your employer won't fire you for being more educated, but they also won't be promoting you in the near future. But if you were to just get more degrees while job-seeking then yeah... you are going to shoot yourself in the foot.

This is just economics.

It's horseshit but it is what it is. Just before Corona we had lined up a really good applicant, very well educated and knowledgeable of many technologies that are useful to us. Corona happened and he got killed. Instead we got 3 people with literally no knowledge at all that we've had to train from 0 but that's what the budget allows. I don't even blame my boss for doing it, we really just needed bodies. And having those people doing grunt-work has allowed us on focusing on bigger things. But it's really fucking shitty.

This is happening right now in every HR departmetn inside every company in the world as we speak. Great candidates are being turned down for shitty candidates. A similarly educated friend of mine who had a better (and better-paying) job got fired immediately once corona hit his company while I've stayed securely in my position.

And this is now but the expected impact will be at least for the next 2 years. Some countries are still locking up even if not as hard as before. And this hurts any business that has any dependency on international trade (i.e. all big companies). Being retarded right now is a blessing.

You should get a job immediately. You just finished your masters so what else would you do. If you manage to get hired then the probability of getting fired decreases with time (in contrast to the absolute uncertainty of being unemployed) and once you are in a secure position you can plan ahead to do whatever you want.

Secure a stable income for the near future before all else.

What about doing a PhD? You develop organizing skills, become more knowledgeable, increase your value for the post-crisis market and can ignore corona job-wise for a few years.

A PhD is unchartered territory for me unfortunately. I have a vague inclination of eventually getting one but I haven't mapped that into my career path. What I do know is that, as you say, doing a Ph.D. will insulate you from the corona economy as hopefully you'll come out of your Ph.D. once the dust has settled. But, beyond that, the job market for PhDs is very niche so if I was in your position (and if I wasn't planning to stay in academia) I'd be mapping the job market. I.e. which companies are actively hiring Ph.D's around me (for example hedge funds, banks, etc) and what would I need to succeed at an interview with them. It's all very delicate because a Ph.D. is an extremely delicate degree. You are pretty much overeducated for almost everything except academia.

Yeah that's true but still you should map them. I.e. what are their hiring standards, what style interviews they give, and the size of the teams they manage. Right now everyone in a Ph.D. program with more than 2 braincells is thinking of jumping into finance the moment they get that piece of paper so the competition must be fierce.
