Even the basic algorithms for path planning/scheduling like RRT/A* require a pretty in depth mathematics background including stochastic calc and some basics of topology. To avoid having too large of a prerequisite set for lectures he intends to reach a non-specialist audience, he simplifies his language to the point where he expects average 13 year olds will understand. This approach may not be appropriate for you, but if it isn't then I'd suggest looking at actually relevant research/active lectures for grad students rather than his efforts to repackage that material for a more general audience.
