Something that works well enough to allow for survival and reproduction to continue propagating genes into the future that's relatively low cost as a feature to emerge is going to greatly outperform something that works perfectly through to the organism's death with much greater cost required to support all the mechanisms that would handle for never allowing problems to happen.
Perfection costs way more than the tiny increase in performance it would provide.
