>>12301169Ever since the industrial revolution you can basically view society as driven entirely by fossil fuels. Once upon a time, asian countries re-used everything, even using "night soil" (human poop) to fertilize their fields, which was sustainable for 4000 years. Now we burn fossil fuels to produce chemical fertilizers to get marginally better crop yields. Everyone's clothing and such used to be made of natural fibers (cotton, wool etc) which could inevitably return to the earth when it has worn through. We used to use minimal packaging. Now we use plastics for clothing and packaging food and drink which we can't recycle very well. Cities, and the entire way of modern life, are just the result of easily accessible energy in the form of fossil fuels. Without this the massive size of cities and general wasteful nature is untenable since fossil fuels are needed for transportation and creation of modern excesses.
Leftists are stuck in a case of doublethink by trying to accept the contradictory ideals of both the modern way of living and environmental protection.
