What is the normal age to reach academic ranks?

is it 21 bachelor, 23 master, 26 phd, 28 lecturer 31 assistant prof, 33 professor, 65 emritus?

also is 30 the final cuttoff for ever doing a STEM phd?

I assumed that most people in the USA would get their Phd when they were approaching 30. Of course, you could do one with 26 but it doesn't seem that common. In Europe, it's comparably rare (not that you couldn't technically do it) but mosts people finish their phd in their thirties.

This is the biggest meme. You could lecture with a master's degree. You could even lecture with a bachelors at a community college. You're conflating degrees with jobs.

As far as my experience goes, no serious uni hires people without PhDs to be lecturers.

I got my PhD at the age of 28 which was about normal.
After that you need 2 - 3 rounds of postdoc each lasting 2 - 4 years before you get tenure, unless you can count on some major nepotism.

Humanities

I'm pretty young for a TT Asst. Prof. A colleague hired at the same time as me was 45 at the time, which is a bit older than average.
37-38 is probably the most common for people with little to no other professional experience (i.e. BA -> PhD -> ~10 years adjuncting -> TT Asst. prof)
Then you have people who chose academia as a second career and start their TT jobs at 50+

I'd say people in STEM fields tend to be 3 to 5 years younger for an equivalent position in the Humanities. I think this is due to shorter PhDs and the fact that comparatively few STEM people keep adjuncting forever until they get a TT job, because they are more likely to transition into industry.

If you want to work as an actual engineer, then Bachelors is enough
A masters is useful if you want to switch companies/regions/break into another industry
PhD is useful if you want to do advanced research, however academia is oversaturated with bean counters and very low quality useless flashy research, while industrial r&d is full of burned out millenials who are just happy being labrats for the rest of their lives

Other industries, like consulting, technical sales and marketing, advising etc., need PhDs, pay much better and you have to deal with a lot of the annoying streaks and characters within aademia or industrial R&D
