I understand what you mean. I'm sure they feel this disconnect their own way, but from the "other side". It's probably horribly alienating. Imagine 99.99% of everyone around you had schizophrenia in the sense that they just functioned significantly different than you, and the entire culture was built around that. I'm sure the world can feel pretty foreign to some.
If you want a better understanding, I would just continue to listen to them straight from the horses mouth and less from therapists. I think your intuition will begin to piece together a picture the more you want to understand.
