What are the biggest differences between ADHD and Asperger's considering DSM-IV didn't allow the diagnosis of both due to how similar the symptoms were?
I got diagnosed as an aspie back as young teen still under IV and recently started wondering if I might not have ADHD too or instead because I recognize myself in a quite lot of ADHD traits.

An absolute majority of those diagnosed with Asperger's also got handed a ADD diagnosis, so I doubt it. I only know that one cannot get a diagnosis for schizoid personality disorder if one has already been diagnosed with Asperger's because those two conditions are clinically indistinguishable in adults.

In theory, the symptoms aren't supposed to be similar. But that's because the DSM is handling with artificial "pure" constructions that most often cannot be actually applied to human beings. This means that hardly any person will display a pure case of a mental illness. Usually, they exhibits traits of several different illnesses. The symptomes of Asperger's not only overlap with ADHD, but especially with schizoid personality disorder and verbal autism (both are now subsumed under Autism Spectrum disorders), and to a significant degree with schizophrenia, anti-social personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I looked at the definitions of high functioning autism and asperger's.

To my understanding, they differ by personality. Aspergers tend to be more narcissist and stubborn if I understand it correctly.
