Can you redpill me on root canal treatment /sci/? X-rays showed my tooth is fucked and I'm booked in for Monday. Why do they have to remove everything inside and not just the infected area then let the rest heal back?
Why do they fill it with a dead material and not a matrix to encourage cell growth or something?

Don't let the dentist do a root canal. Just let them pull the teeth.
A tooth with with a root canal will feel like a foreign object in your mouth and the feeling will not get away as long as it remains in your mouth. Despite what the dentist tells you, you will never get used it. It's absolute hell and you will want to kill yourself every single day.

a root canal is needed if either the actual pulp is exposed (through a cavity), or the pulp is so close to the surface that drilling out the cavity would expose the pulp.
pulp is soft and weak, and normally sealed off from bacterial exposure. if bacteria get into the pulp, the bacteria will spread and destroy all the way down to the root of the tooth, and into the bone of your jaw. you have to remove all the material down to the bone once you break the seal. you replace the pulp with a filler material because otherwise you'd have a hollow core in the tooth and it would be more likely to break.
a root canal is "fine" in the sense that you wouldn't notice the difference between a normal crown and a root canal (as the person with one). you lose the hot/cold sensitivity associated with a healthy pulp, but you can still feel the pressure of the tooth in your gumline, or if you wiggle the tooth around or whatever.

The pulp is live tissue and soft, if it's infected the entire thing is basically unsalvageable. You can't really tell what is infected and what is not and if you tried to only remove the bad parts you would inevitably miss some which would immediately reinfect it. You will already lose the "benefits" of the pulp when you take the top part off (like say heat sensitivity) so you might as well get rid of the entire thing at that point anyways, less likely that you will get reinfection and eliminates any nerves that could cause pains afterwards.

If you got money and bone barrow to spend then you could go for it, sure it takes like 10 visits and requires expensive surgery but anything for your tooth right? I mean who wouldn't pick that over basically painless 45 minute operation that makes a tooth that is more or less as good as it started out with.

You want to have it done by a dentist with experience, an endodontist if possible. Skill is everything in this treatment. The other major factor is the shape of your root canals.
If you don't have an abcess in the root, then you have 90 chances of it holding well for 5-10 years, maybe more.

The process can take a number of sessions. In my case it was 4 because my molar had 3 or 4 roots. You will be X-rayed a number of times. The removal of the pulp inside the canals feels really bad, even with anesthesics.

However, be aware that root canals can fail at any moment, due to germs getting inside the sealed roots. So your dentist will schedule periodic revisions to X-ray. The first one will be at 1 month, the next 3-6 months, then yearly, then whenever you go to a normal check.

You can, if you master the skill of pulling up your own teeth.

When these things fail you don't notice as early as in normal teeth because there are no nerves to cause pain. So it slowly forms an abcess, or a bit of receeding bone due to root infection. Thats the purpose of regular checks, to look for radiolucid voids around the roots.

It is clearly a case of either root-canal or extraction then. I was root-canaled for way less. When cleaning the cavity, my dentist didn't even know in advance if the pulp was affected because X-rays were not conclusive. It was a borderline case, as the tooth was still showing vitality signs (cold test). But once she removed the mashed infected dentin, a small dot of pulp was exposed. The protocol at this point says to go for root canal or extraction. But i think it should be possible to regenerate the dentin and cover it all with artificial enamel. Dentistry cant do that yet, apparently.

This was a very treacherous interdental cavity, i could not see it visually so I only knew there was a problem when it started hurting to cold liquids (I actually completely disregarded 6 months of previous halitosis). In dentistry, this is already too late. It took me 15 days to get an appointment, and in that time my teeth was virtually lost.

Dunno what your problem is, but I had a root canal a few years ago. Took a while to get used to the crown, yeah, but I don't even notice it anymore.

The need for procedures gets rushed and amplified in the US.
I had the tiniest overlap on one of my front teeth next to my canine. Dentist said I needed my wisdoms all taken out. I was young. Not only was it a frightening experience watching to guys lay into my very strong teeth and break them/yank them out, but the whole thing fucked my jaw.

I also had a root canal and I was never made aware of any options or how I could potentially repair the root without destroying it.
Now that I know more about food ingestion, I probably could have let it heal and got it capped.

The living tissue inside of the tooth is indeed gone, but the living tissue connecting your tooth to the bone is alive and well living on the outside of the tooth. If root canals freak you out, don't read about join replacements, doctors basically just cement the prosthesis into the bone marrow with cold hardening acrylic.
