Is a PhD from a low quality school worth anything? I'm not talking about a literal diploma mill, one a step or two above that, something at least accredited in the US.

I'm thinking a solid thesis is solid no matter who and where it comes from. How naive am I about this? Maybe I can understand when thinking about this in terms of publishing. If the school and advisor is low prestige it makes it harder to get the research published in a prestige journal resulting in less exposure.

What this anon said. Check what journals the people in the research group regularly publish in and check if they are reviewers or editorial members of journals. Take a good look at their research output.

This. Better to be working for a big-name professor (e.g. endowed professorship or chair, academy memberships, journal editorial boards, blah blah blah) at a less prestigious school, over an assistant professor at a more prestigious school.
