Matriarchies can exist, and I would say some native American communities and past Indian communities are reasonabl examples.
They're good for sort of leveling things out.
Patriarchies are good when it's time to construct culture and identity as well as give objective direction.
Matriarchies tend to be more subjective, and the objectivity is more localized.
