you can't separate quarks because it takes more energy than creating more of them does but what happens if you start with two lone quarks on opposite sides of the universe?

This is a good question. I'm inclined to believe that soft radiation of gluons in the form of the "strong field" emitted by a quark (analogous to the E&B fields of an electron) would convert the lone quarks into some manner of hadronic states. The way I'm thinking about this is similar to the hypothesis of a pionic/mesonic existing around a proton.

If you had a universe that was empty except for two quarks on the opposite ends of the universe from each other it would expand so fast that the information that the other existed would never reach either quark.
But suppose you put them at the maximum distance apart from each other that they could inteact with each other, essentially putting each quark on the boundary of the other's hubble volume. I'm not going to do the math as to how far that is but I suspect that with inflation superpowered by the lack of matter it's not very far.
They do nothing until time equal to the distance apart from each other in lighttime has elapsed, then at the instant they enter each other's light cones a line of quarks and gluons spontaneously appears connecting them.

wouldn't the quark/gluon line start in the middle when both quarks enter the half way point's light cone, then travel out?

i don’t think these are correct answers. if you start out with a universe with two oppositely color-charged quarks separated by some long distance, then i think the correct answer is that regardless of their separation they both immediately start having a huge cascade of mesons that only stops once the two hardonic showers meet up and the two leftover plot charges neutralize one another.

what is more curious is if you have just one quark in the entire universe...

i don’t think these are correct answers. if you start out with a universe with two oppositely color-charged quarks separated by some long distance, then i think the correct answer is that regardless of their separation (even if outside of each other’s light cones) they both immediately start having a huge cascade of mesons that only stops once the two hadronic showers meet up and the two leftover color charges neutralize one another. they immediately hadronize without needing to “see” each other because the bath of hadrons is energetically favorable to having a naked color charge, since the naked color charge couples super strongly to vacuum fluctuations at long distances—in other words it is energetically favorable to “screen” those interactions so mesons pop out of the vacuum to do the screening

what is more curious is if you have just one quark in the entire universe...

how is asymptotic freedom relevant here? asymptotic freedom is about how strong forces behave at very very SHORT distances, whereas quark confinement is about long distances
