Currently an industry research scientist. Shit varies a lot but from other teams it's a lot of "hey chemistry, we want to know how to check X how do??" and either it's something one-off so you just send it to a testing lab and it's basically no work for you except finding said lab or it can be more interesting where you get to play with niche industry equipment which like 3 people in the country have because they cost $100k and only have one function. That's not that often though maybe a few times per year.
Daily duties are R&D shit which is a lot of documentation, writing/reviewing protocols, reports, test methods, etc (medical devices industry so lots of documentation is required to keep everything kosher). Experimenting still happens but most of it gets put on to the lab tech and research assistant because I'm busy with other stuff, I could prioritise the experiments but most of them aren't new techniques for me so I use the time for other shit. Other shit is mostly just me doing paper research to get ideas.
I initially started as lab tech -> research assistant -> research associate -> research scientist. At my work there's literally no difference between the last two positions and little-to-no difference between the first two, research assistant just does more documentation.
