If you study for instance Wightman's "Spin, Statistics and PCT" you will learn, that quantum fields are operator valued distributions, whereas classical fields are complex valued distributions. From a mathematical point of view it is quite well understood, what a quantum fields is. what is not known, if it is possible to write a well defined *interacting* qft (see Haag's theorem).
