learn how they survived. compare their dna to modern organisms' dna. see what conditions they thrive in and cross reference against what current thought on their climate was, and see if they agree. observe how they fare against modern bacteria.

Yes, you are amazingly correct. But, organism that tend to survive these conditions have heatshock proteins, a different ionic composition or simply a lower ammount of water inside their bodies, so the chances that they might be able to survive frost is far higher. Of course, it's chance, if the cristals did manage to grow too fast and big the animal won't survive defrosting.

If you eat old carbon you carbon date as being as old as the carbon you eat. People that eat a lot of ocean fish throw off carbon dating all the time and it has to be accounted for to get accurate results.

If these worms are eating old methane they will carbon date as being quite old indeed.
