I'm slightly interested in physics because it seems to be what happens when a mathematician does too much crack but there is one thing evading me:
What the fuck is happening with string theory? There are no confirmations that any of it has any validity yet papers about it get published all the time by scientists getting paid by universities and public grants. What the fuck? String theory is a hobby theory so why is anyone being paid to study it? They are literally just sucking their own cocks all day and getting paid for it. Am I wrong?

Yeah I get that but Einstein's theories were completely established by a couple of papers when he was working as a patent-clerk. I.e. his HOBBY research was being funded by his own time and money that he obtained in a profession and then decided to invest in his HOBBY. On contrast string theory just seems like a con for retards who can't do real research to pretend they are doing physics when in reality they are doing simplified pure mathematics (and math that barely any mathematician gives a shit about so I would not like them getting funding from this side either).
