Listen kid, I'm gonna dumb it down for you. This is what your algorithm should be:
1. Open book
2. Read preface - does it say it's aimed at you? (not that big of a deal imho if it's aimed above your level, just realise that a book for undergrads will be very different from a book for grads)
3. Start reading chapter 1 - can you follow along? If yes, keep on reading, if no, go to step 4
4. Find a more junior book - go to step 1
