The theory that black holes exist first came around in 1915 or so & everyone though it was a really neat idea because they also thought that neutrons, protons and electrons were all fundamental particles. 60 years later it was discovered that protons and neurons are not fundamental particles, however the black hole concept has never been revised to account for it.
