Physics question

Hello /sci/, I have an absolutely simple question but I want the exact physics phenomenon:

If I throw my keys in the air just a bit, they don't hurt. If I throw them very high up in the air, it hurts when I catch them. Why is this? What exactly is my body feeling different?

If the answer is pressure, why?? Same force/surface area.

If the answer is impulse or kinetic energy, does that mean that surface area does not matter?

pls to help
