>>12266622There are two things you need to distinguish:
Facts, and intents.
-Facts are what is. They are self sufficient. They are descriptions of our reality.
-Intents are what you think should be.
Intents are not facts, there is no objective reason to back them up, only subjective ones.
Why should I not kill my neighbor? Because I would be locked up. Why shouldn't I be locked up? Because that would make my life miserable. Why shouldn't my life be miserable? Because I seek happiness. Why do I seek happiness? Because I was made that way. Why was I made that way? Because the universe was made that way. Why was the universe made that way? Ultimately no reason. In the end, things are the way they are and you won't find an initial cause.
The reason some people believe in god is because they need to posit an initial cause to justify their intents. They need to put an end to the endless justification of their actions:
If a god made the universe that way, then that would explain why I was made that way, why I seek happiness, why I don't want to feel miserable, why I don't want to be locked up, and thus why I shouldn't kill my neighbor.
If people didn't have a reason for the thing they do, they wouldn't feel the need to do anything.
Religion, morality, preferences are all evolutionary mechanisms to prevent humanity from abandoning ideals, decaying and then disappearing. Only those who believe in something survive.
Humans have intents. You are not human if you don't have any intents, because that's how human are. You can't not want anything, because even not wanting anything is wanting something.
We can't get rid of our intents and are forced to act toward them thorough our lives.
I envy people who convinced themselves that their actions are justified.
I'm a nihilist and only found despair from those cold harsh facts. I can't free myself from those ideas, because I feel like I would be straying from the truth if I abandoned them.
Trust me, you don't want to be a nihilist.
