There’s plenty of shame in it, especially in today’s world. If you are voluntarily celibate people will find it odd but respectable. An involuntary celibate in adulthood, however, is looked down upon. It shows you are incapable of forming intimate relationships because you are socially inept and/or physically repulsive. Humans are sexual creatures, thus if you are for some reason unable to have sex it indicates to others you are inferior.

All that said, to answer the OP I am not a virgin. It is not the same for everyone but like most average men losing my virginity elevated my confidence immensely, and precipitated my growth into adulthood

I didn't have many friends in highschool and I wasn't a brave guy either, my parents worried a lot if I wasn't home because I live in a dangerous place, so I didn't have the social development adolescents get and thus I lost good chances of having a girlfriend in university, let alone a wife.
