How realistic is it for humanity to have gone to Mars by 2040?
How far will we actually realistically travel in space (both in person and with probes) over the next few decades?

We've had a flyby of Pluto, cant go further than that other than collecting some data on the Kuiper Belt and Oort cloud. It will be more of the same shit, maybe a couple of new robot explorers to near Earth objects, Lots more data only of interest to die hard scientists, some nice pictures and lots more confirmation that its all just rock, dust, gas and ice out there.

But its all slowly scaling down. The amount of money expended per GNP is decreasing. There's no return on investment for anything done beyond this planet. Space colonization is a meme, beloved only by the infantile minded. Civilization collapse is a far more likely future than any new manned Moon landing, let alone a manned mission to Mars.

100% dependent on how SpaceX/Starship performs.

They're doing some prototype testing right now. If these prototypes make to orbit in ~1 year, its 100% likely we'll have humans by 2040.

I wouldn't say 100% dependent (there is always a chance that Blue Origin might use their Bezos bucks to actually do something useful, or the Chinks end up getting there) but yeah, SpaceX is ahead of everyone when it comes to rockets right now, and their Starship rocket that is under development is specifically designed to enable Mars colonization. Plus their Starlink network is going up quite nicely; most profit estimates for it mean they will have enough funds to bankroll their Mars efforts without outside assistance (though obviously they will be perfectly willing to accept extra funding if it is available).

And given how well the Starship project is going so far, I would give them 50/50 odds of launching manned mission during the 2026 launch window, and ~90% odds of doing so by 2028. I would also wager they will pull off a manned lunar flyby in 2024 or 2025, and a landing within a year of that or so.

We might have landed a mission on it but as Mars lacks economic motivation I doubt that we are going to see any colony on it soon.

In the rest of first half of the 21th century we might see the first asteroid mining but space industralization will only get really going once we get Helium-3 fusion reactors because tat would create a massive economic argument to move to the moon and the gas planets. Alongside other industries will be developed. I guess in the last quarter of this century we might see such development but the space age will only truly begin in the next century.

space flight would be okay if the pother planets were full of water and trees, but going for dust is a desperate attempt for ADD ridden atheist retards who need goals in their life to avoid committing suicide from boredom

Correct, the moons, the asteroids, mercury and the gas planets are more sensible goals for space industralization. Colonizing worlds is rather inefficient, space habitats are preferable. Why colonize a world if you can built one?
