how long do you spend on a problem before looking at the solution? is it dumb to not get it within 10-15 minutes?

Depends. I'll lay on my floor staring at the ceiling thinking about the problem for maybe 20 minutes before I bother to look it up.

I try to spend a day or two looking for an answer to my assignment questions. If I still can't prove it then I ask my mates or the Internet for a hint. Only when it's the day before do I look it up as I type set my proofs up and that takes me hours to do.

I find that you will learn better from it the longer you struggle over it.
But you can potentially learn more by moving faster through more problems.

I set a timer for 4 hours and if I don't get an answer in 4 hours, I look it up or ask for help.

we're learning topology right now in my analysis class (open covers, etc.), and some of the proofs take me half a day. i'm probably just a brainlet though

Wish I was proactive.

I leave it to the absolute late moment. I don't even look at the assignment until I do it, and I do it at the last conceivable moment so that I finish it and and finish it with literal seconds to spare.

Everyone always said I would be able to get away with that at X level of study, but here I am still leaving stuff until the absolute last moment.

I mainly do it like this because I consider myself to be a very weak student. I get the equivalent of Bs in my assignment but I know that if I didn't work as much I most likely would be failed as my other peers are a whole lot stronger than me.

Out of curiosity how are your grades? If you get As or above then I don't see a problem. Do what works for you :)

I'm doing a course in homotopy theory. I'm not liking it so far because my lecturer said that a proof by picture suffices for some of the assignment and I'm scratching my head at it.

There are math professors out there that would advise you to take a life time to try and solve a single question that is geared towards learning a subject and it really rattles my marbles for some reason
