You can dedicate yourself full-time to what you like and become very good at it but unless you have a talent for self-promotion and social skills (even better if you have narcissistic/sociopathic tendencies) you're more likely to get into the field with a degree than any amount of knowledge

This is not mastering economics, just learning useful complementary skills. Still most of your time you should invest into what will most likely get you into the job market
