The media don't really report on anything other than meme science that a high schooler can understand. Most improvements require a bit more insight to understand why it's important.
I highly doubt your average person in the 1950s-1970s had any clue or interest about what IBM and places like that were doing.
Just image all the stuff you kind of heard about through the media now (and didn't understand), will actually have significance in 10-50 years.
i.e. we've suspected quantum affects for a long time, but only now really finding (marketable) applications for it.
Science comes first way before application, as application is more about engineering it.
