That empty land is either cropland, pasture land, forest or worthless. The world isn't overpopulated based on calculating how much space each human takes up, it's overpopulated based on calculating how much space each human's food supplies take up.

According to a 2018 FAO estimate, with optimal plant choices out of what is currently available and no solution to aquifer depletion, glacial meltwater depletion, soil calcium depletion, soil iron depletion, soil magnesium depletion, soil manganese depletion, soil phosphorus depletion, soil sulphur depletion, soil tin depletion and soil zinc depletion there is enough fertile land to feed 11 billion people. That's the maximum.
And at current depletion rates of these sources with no change to current renewal rates, it drops to 9 billion by 2050 and 4.7 billion by 2100.

Overpopulation isn't a problem.

This is a strawman argument that super rich people love to talk about because it distracts people from the truth. All the problems of overpopulation is about lack of resources, and the rich hoard and control all the resources. They want you to forget this so you don't get mad and angry at them, and instead redirect your anger at all the other poor people who are "overpopulating" the planet.
