Hey /sci/ I tried /b/ but being an autist myself, I didn't realize that would be of no use. Material properties question. Can you change the phase of a metal without reaching the temperature of its already given temperament?

Say you weld a large, 4" thick piece of 6061 Al. Would the temperature effected zone reach a temp high enough to effect the properties of the material?
