Helping other members of the pack avoid the source of threat so their survivability chance could increase.
Alert you of the area that's being put under pressure of infection or is currently leading to a life threatening situation so 'you', the animal could employ your survival 'strategies'; I.E. cats licking their wounds.
A better question would be, why is it that the brain doesn't have those receptors? It could be that the thickness of the skull and the fluid that protects it already serves as a means of preservation whereas the sky easily bruises, organs can suffer trauma and what not and the brain needs not be distracted with pain since it regulates breathing, heart beat and everything else that's involved in your body.
