As you alluded to, with enough experience, projects, and marketable skills, you can easily break into software, but barring the preference for CS majors at the big places, basically everyone in STEM can break into software because of its anti-credentialist attitude. Not to trivialize software.
Now, the math major does train you to think, and you can stretch your domain pretty easily into other stuff. It's not easy, and if you want to get into research, it's better to just do grad school, but you're not out in the water without a paddle.
