How does someone even figure out Pythagoras' theorem? What leads them to start thinking of squares?

I believe it was probably just the result of some egyptian savage dicking around with a handful of equal sized squares until he had adjoined them in such a way that there were three larger squares with a 3/4/5 right triangle between them. He probably noticed that you need a certain number of squares to get this fixed ratio with which the pattern could be reproduced. Once the pattern is deduced, it's just a matter of writing it down.

If you take sticks making a right angle triangle and using the sun at different angles project it onto a wall, tabulate the lengths of the 3 sides, you can easily see the pythagorean theorem.
