Engineering to Med school

Pros and cons of going to med after doing a engineering undergraduate degree. I am currently a 3rd year electrical engineering student at a top university. There are a large number of EE students who go to highly competitive medical schools from my university. If this is a route I want to go into should I focus on research rather than internships?

OP here, more explicitly, do medical schools give higher chances of admission to engineering students? Obviously getting into an competitive engineering program is much harder than getting into almost any biology or chemistry program. So I am assuming that I have at least some level of benefit over typical premed students.

Medical schools might weigh your GPA 0.2 higher than what it says on your transcript if you did a really difficult major (which I would consider EE to be), but you shouldn't count on that and could be straight up filtered out if your GPA is too low.

Personally, i'm glad I did biochem as an undergrad major into medschool. I was also a engineering major my first 2 years(ChemE), but I started getting C's and B's and transferred into biochem, where I got stellar grades and good letters of rec.

Go register on AMCAS so you can see the official timeline of when you need to have all your stuff in. If you want to matriculate as a senior to medical school without a gap year, you need to have all of your stuff in by the end of december of junior year (if i remember correctly). Matriculant GPA is usually around 3.6-3.8, while matriculant MCAT is around 510. A low GPA is 3.4 or lower, but you can still get into med school if you slam the MCAT, have good extracurriculars or really good letters of rec. Ideally you'd want to take the MCAT second semester sophomore year, but the best answer is when you've reviewed the material and feel ready for it (to get a competitive score). The clubs and honors society are good, you should also start getting clinical hours (volunteer or paid), around 150 is like the bare minimum and some volunteer hours to help your resume if this is something you're serious about.

If you are interested in taking the MCAT soon you should look up some high scorer AMAs from reddit, as they have good study tips which can help (mine are to do anki cards everyday, start using AMCAS review material 2 months out and uWorld).

In the United States, no, your GPA is not perceived differently by medical school adcoms based on your major. If you attend Harvard, Stanford, or Yale, you might get a +0.2 GPA bump in consideration regardless of major.

That might be true, but keep in mind that a biology or chemistry degree will be much more applicable to a medical school curriculum than a mechanical engineering degree.

Why do you want to be a doctor? During your life as an engineer you will have to work less and you will end up earning about the same as a doctor. You need an actual reason for wanting to be a doctor. So far in your situation, there are no pros to being a doctor, only cons. You have to make those pros yourself.

I started developing a deep interest to the possibility of going to medical school when I did research in neural engineering and brain computer interfaces. I have been getting heavily involved with my schools neuroscience society and connecting with doctors and engineers in the field. This is still something I am considering and researching a lot on. I have reached out to several doctors who were engineers or math heavy majors such as CS, math, or physics in undergrad on what their advice is. It isn't impossible to do medical school from a non traditional background. I think that going into neuro would be a good fit for me. I love doing research and I have already worked on neural engineering research projects. They are the ones who have the most research publications at the start of their residency.

That field diverged a long time ago. Neuroscience at this point is as much pseudoscience as phrenology. Its research is hardly ever translated into a true application. The fields of Psychology and Neurology do independent research that is aimed to study solutions to the disease which almost always are pharmacological, not to "deepen understanding" or such nonsense.

Besides, you still don't get that medicine is a trade. You deal with people, not data. If you want to become a researcher you're wasting your time in medicine. Residents are forced to publish bullshit as requisites, they're not doing it out of their own will.

I seriously don't understand why you can't understand this simple fact. What you want to do, which is research etc, is already done by people of their own disciplines. We read the cookbook and negotiate lifestyle changes with people.

You're assuming because I like research that I don't like to deal with people. I socialize a lot even for a engineering student. I knowww that medicine is a trade but some specialties do in fact have a heavy emphasis on doing research. For example, functional and stereotactic neurosurgeons often have PhDs and backgrounds in CS and EE.

I'd suggest getting some shadowing hours at your local hospital. Usually the hospitals have a program with which you can so this through. The other anon is right about the job tho, theres a lot of bullshit in this job.
