Most businesses requires investors which would be harder to pitch with a failed PhD.

Are they just hoping the $20k investment will let them ride on any success you have?

Seems weird to offer your kid startup capital when they have just started a PhD.

Essentially I've been bitchin on how LOW the quality of the local department is, and they are offering me a way out.
