Should I drop out of school?

I enjoy mathematics and I would like to continue studying it at a research level someday(dont care for trying to attain any kind of prestige or good position, would be happy to do it anywhere i could), but I also really don't want to deal with any obligations that would make my study of mathematics less enjoyable.

No anon, dealing with the bullshit you hate about your dream job is par course. No researcher likes writing grants or kissing ass, but their love of the subject pulls them through. If u can even make it through your university courses, you may want to consider a different major.

I'm doing fine in my classes right now, just wondering if it is worth it. I mean, we live in a modern age. Everything you could want to know is all online, even the frontiers of research.

You cant contribute shit to your field of interest if you cant even be asked to pursue an academic position anon. Ask yourself how many researchers have papers with a decent number of citations are in non-academic positions

If you're already studying math you probably shouldn't drop out. For research it's important to interact with others in the field and it's hard to get to these people from outside of academia. Being part of a group (actually meeting and talking to people on a regular basis) is a great motivator. If you can't find something like this it's possible that your progress will slow down substantially. You'll also have you sustain yourself in another way possibly giving less time for research. A positive about dropping out is less debt.

Otherwise, you might as well complete your degree. It's difficult enough to get a job WITH a degree, imagine the hurdles you'll have to face without one.

I'd recommend going through with your degree, even if you half-ass it.
