that food is now out of reach of others who would steal it.
Any animal too large can't land on the branch.
Any other animal small enough to land on the branch, will see the bodies of the defeated strewn about the landscape and shall despair and know fear of the shrike.
What I find amazing is that no other animal has evolved a counter to this evolutionary tactic.
