if you study measure theory and integration, there are well known examples as to why it doesn't work in general. However, for separable DE's, you can show it works using basic methods from calculus as a sanity check. So yes physicists are sloppy a lot of the time, but math undergrads make too much of a big deal of something that works in the cases they're studying.

This is a perfectly reasonable thing to do for functions with continuous derivatives, as is common in physics.
If physicists were to employ the same rigor as mathematicians we'd never get anything done.

Because then they'd be mathematicians. Seriously, several of my math profs have told me the same story about how they were in physics before before they realized that they actually enjoyed math more and switched programs. Not to compare physicists to biologists, but it's like asking why biologists can't into math. If biologists cared about math as more than just a tool for counting reindeer they wouldn't be biologists now would they?

then 1/a doesn't work either because a could be zero.
Even better, in physics things "go to zero" while not being exactly zero. This is why consideration of derivatives, even if they are "zero" is viable.

I'm not exactly sure how pure math lords do calc, since the highest math class I took was 300 but that fraction *does* work in real life.

Isn't this a result of the reciprocal rule and in general physicists care about real numbers. If not then we would not care about normalization and QM
