How do I git gud at stats?
Is there something I can do besides brute force, all these mathematical notations may as well be in Chinese

Just look at the example to see what is going. Statistics is surprisingly simple when you get it. Just ignore the mathematical notation and do the exercises in your book.

Stat usually isn't worth the paper it's written on. There's wayyyyy too many variables, way too much personal, way too much we don't know and can't account for, etc. Yet we will undergo autistic hypnosis to convince ourselves to take a certain direction.

just go to kaggle and look at some notebooks. You don't need more than that to get a data scientist job

For a complete beginner I guess the house prices and the titanic would be the best. But like, competitions just give you the dataset, there's no instructions.
