The early stages of stars are very turbulent with lots of mass ejection and high solar winds. These blow the lighter gasses away from the sun, solid materials don’t get accelerated as much and collagate.

My guess would be that the trace elements are distributed throughout the star, themselves being part of the plasma. Elements with higher density would be more affected gravitationally, but at the same time they would be affected more by convection due to higher heat capacity.
