The most likely answer is that sci fi fantasy tech can't actually be built. It requires solving problems that aren't feasibly computable, or materials that do not actually exist in the set of all combinations of atoms, and other things like that.

You don't need sci-fi fantasy tech to colonise the universe. All you need is: self replication, near human level AI and interstellar travel. We know all three are possible because they appear in nature.
