He claims he doesn't use math from his research area to make his trades. He said he uses "basic" statistics. My guess is his strategy is being about to gather huge data sets, compute correlations with thin margins of error and then quickly compute predictions to make money.
He was an early market entrant using this approach and likely had excellent connections to get initial funding. His strategy at the time was effective and allowed him to make extraordinary gains which gave him more access to talent. Those people were able to draw in more money etc etc.
