They do I guess, as some air will be trapped after breathing out and go in again. That volume is so low though, it's probably negligible.

If the mask can block gases from escaping, then it will stop most viral particles. If it can't stop viral particles, then it's not going to trap gasses either. It's one or the other.

(in reality it's neither, because they do a decent job of blocking viral particles while allowing the majority of gases through)

CO2 inhalation promotes higher co2 blood levels which increases tissue oxygenation through the bohr effect, it's not a bad thing. If anything is bad about the gas part of the masks it's lack of oxygen or the constant underpressure/overpressure causing tension in the lungs
