Im interpreting an infinitesimal as the limit of an interval on the real number line as the interval approaches zero length. Is this correct? If so then I would think this is a real number

Technically it is not. From your own interpretation, you should be able to see how the interval can always get closer and closer to zero. There is no number that is "sufficiently close to zero" that we define as an infinitesimal

Curvy lines are harder to analyze than straight lines. But when you zoom in close enough to a curvy line, it basically looks like a straight line. Measure that tiny piece, add up all the tiny pieces, and you’ll get very close to having measured the whole curvy line.
