Is this a good technique for analyzing the amount of unreacted 1-octanol produced by fischer esterification, and then seeing if DES extractions can remove the 1-octanol?

you can try but remember that 1-octanol is partially soluble in both the organic and polar phase. You risk losing some on the way.

Actually, 1-octanol has a very low solubility in water.
