Natural evolution is the blind chaos of random selection and knows no intrinsic, but we are merely at the beginning of cultural evolution. Soon we will give way for the augmented human that will outpace baseline humans on every merit but the reign of the transhuman will be a short one as in a century or two posthumans will emerge and search the possibilities, expand outwards and inwards and shape the cosmos in their image.

Humanity is currently experiencing an extreme dysgenic pressure on intelligence. 3 generations from now the average IQ will be 5 points less, wait a few more generations after and we will truly return to monke. Chinese have genetically modified 3 children to have a somewhat enhanced intelligence (https://www.technologyreview.com/2019/02/21/137309/the-crispr-twins-had-their-brains-altered/) and they only played with one DNA. If we add BCI, nanosymbionts to genetic augmentation then I am optimistic about hte human future.

What a meme. We're going to end up with horribly disfigured mutants due to inadvertent damage caused by CRISPR. It will never, NEVER be mainstream, Eugenics is already abhorred by the west, most westerners would rather have the world fall than have eugenics instituted. Technology makes intelligence redundant. Why waste brainpower doing math when you have a calculator? Why develop a sense of direction when you drive with a sat nav? Human beings are already cyborgs, our tech just isn't integrated into our bodies yet.

Do you really think they're gong to do that with humans, though? As a form of improvement for the entire next generations of humans? I don't think they're willing to do that, intelligent people in the wild aren't going to buddy up with the ones in power.

Well, I guess not, but if I'm not mistaken, isn't a part of natural selection based on environmental pressures along with the natural instincts of the individuals or something? Humans are able to break through those, even though we don't always do it. Humans could choose how to evolve, but it seems society doesn't want to ask those questions. Where do we want our species to be in the future?

It will be voluntary. Those who can afford to have CRISPR babies will. Given the choice between leaving your child's genetics to chance (and risking retardation, ugliness etc.) or editing your child's genes, what would you choose?

No. The age of the renaissance man is long gone. Discoveries are made by teams of people doing specialised tasks, like on a production line. Science/engineering/creativity are a process, any moron can follow the steps and get the same results: "put a slightly different version of a formula in 50 petri dishes and see what happens".

What's the point in an amoeba evolving the ability to detect chemicals in liquid? There is no point to anything. Human beings are a medium for technology/culture - this is the biggest misconception of all. Human beings don't "invent" or "discover" anything, they transmit memes (information, tech, culture) between themselves which manifest as culture/memeplexes. Culture is to memes what the cell is to endosymbiotic bacteria.

How could they stop it? We already allow people to choose gametes for IVF, transfer mitochondria (three parent children) and screen embryos for down syndrome etc.

Not at first. Initially CRISPR will probably be used by parents who carry genetic diseases. Some people might want to make superficial changes to the child's genetics - hair colour etc. I think we're a long way from creating the ubermensch.

It already is. It is used to prevent genetic diseases already and I have no doubts that we will soon see it as a new vaccine that helps one to have a better health and a better life quality as well. It will probably first only be used to ensure the best potential health of the next generation, no cancer before 80, no fast aging and no alzheimer but modification of intelligence and fitness can also fall under the purview of life quality.

Yeah, that`s not how CRISPR works. Especially Cas 13 and higher are even more stable than natural processes and CRISPR is not the zenith of biotechnology. Nanomedicine, proteus nanovirusis and biomodded organs are also not far away. CRISPR is possible right now and in around10 years it will be possible to safely utilize it beyond merely preventing worst genetic diseases.

I expect a plethora of human modifications but I do expect that some sort of universal health care system will be implamented to ensure that future generation can all benefit from genetic modifications. In general such modifications will only try to maximise non-positional elemtents of a person like health, fitness and intelligence. Beyond such sensible position autocracies, subcultures and isolates will try to modify their offspring or themselves to other forms and I would say that we would need a genetic regualtory agency to minimize such abuses.

Eh, the first designer babies will appear quite normal. They still will shit in their pants and moan to stay later in the night. Even if you understand genetic good enough to ensure that your child is born with intelligence of a genius, the physique of a olympiar star and a life expectancy of 120 years, such people will still be within human possibility. It would just be that such geniuses now have become ordinary and we will have to fix education to fit their needs. The real problems will only come if we use parahuman modifications on intelligence and create a human clade that is as smarter to us as we are to chimpanzee.
