I have no idea about it, but I watched this video a while ago, and from what I can see, they increased the volume over 18650 batteries so that they could get more power/energy, improved a few things and made the process much cheaper for themselves.

The main thing that tesla is pushing harder than anyone else is batteries at scale, if their current road map actually pans out, then no one else will be able to compete on batteries except for small scale applications in the future. The 4680 dry cathode battery is already being used in the thousands in prototypes. The main problem with graphene so far for decades now is that it scales for shit, if Samsung does succeed with that battery it'll be many years before they can scale it.
For perspective the company that developed the dry cathode tech was years ago by Maxwell technologies. Tesla then acquired them, then a few years later finally produced a manufacturable battery

Incorrect. Just in the past four years identified reserves have doubled. As the economic incentives to mine lithium continues to grow, so will exploration and better refinement methods.

Every single tech company on earth is most interested in batteries
sure Samsung might be driving technology forwards, but as I just pointed out if you don't push manufacturing compatible of producing those batteries, then it'll just end up in another "top 5 battery technologies that will change the future" article. Tesla is of course interested in cost reduction because they are very much large scale, they are willing to lose a few wh/l if that means that can produce them faster and cheaper and no they spend hardly anything on marketing.
Samsung which produces mainly for consumer electronics would be willing to add a 20% increase in cost if that means they get a 5% increase in density. One reason for that is, most of their applications are single cell, compared to the hundreds or thousand cell scale Tesla works in

First of all, using lithium to make large batteries is not "wasting it" - even after the battery fully degrades all that lithium is still there in the battery, waiting to be recycled along with the rest of the car.

Secondly, lithium is not a particularly limited resource. Known lithium resources have doubled in the last 4 years, since mining companies are actually looking for it. And it is important to remember that "lithium" batteries are mostly nickel & graphite by weight. A few years ago a financial company had a full breakdown of a 70 kw-hr Tesla Model S battery done; they found it had 12 kg of elemental lithium in it. Current known lithium resources are at 80 million metric tons, so that works out to enough lithium for 6.6 billion cars.

Lithium is actually surprisingly rare, like it's not 3rd most common element as you might expect but more like 25th, right around lead, cobalt or copper or such. It is relatively rare but again there's still plenty of it considering the use cases and reserves.

Its rare in the sense that if you use current prices of extraction and current technology we'd probably run out in a couple decades. Similar to how it was predicted we'd run out of oil almost 30 years ago, but things like horizontal fracking and sand tar refining changed that.

Well, from what I gathered in the battery day thing, as seen by a chemistry brainlet, it seems they're refining and introducing new production techniques to drive cost down as part of their acquisition of Maxwell and some other companies.

Although beyond that, not sure.
