can anyone who's smart and knows about pharmacology and hormones tell me if finasteride is safe to take? So much conflicting information on the internet and my doctor doesn't tell me anything good. I'm so paranoid but I don't want to be an incel AND bald at 19.

Get all relevant blood tests (doc knows, if he doesnt go for a second opinion). Doc should tell you if everything is ok. At that point you can take fin. Most People with sides had pre-existing issues that would have come out if they got their blood checked.

even if I don't get noticeable side effects isn't it bad to mess with my hormones when Im so young? This is what I'm most curious about, how will it affect my development. I've been on it for almost a year and noticed subtle changes in my mood and libdio but it might be the placebo effect I don't know.

First doctor told me to take only a small amount, I moved and got another doctor, he told me to take more since it wasn't working. Never said anything about a blood test, so I may bring that up.

Finasteride has a highly nonlinear response, you reach saturation with a very low dose as 5AR takes about 2 weeks to regenerate after being irreversibly inhibited. how old are you? you need DHT to complete puberty, so taking it before the end of that - somewhere between 20 and 25 for most men - might not be ideal, but as long as you aren't 17 or something it's fine so long as you can withstand the sides

So you've been it on it since you were 18, what Norwood were you at that you had to start so young? For what it's worth my doctor refused to give me a blood test (I wanted baseline E2 levels to gauge gyno susceptibility) so good luck.

I've been losing hair since I was 17, it's only my hairline that's the problem but it goes really far back now. It wasn't even my decision at the time my mother took me to the doctor and then ghe doctor told me to take finasteride after a little while of trying other things. I was silly to go along with it, the doctor even told me to not look at anything online since none of his patients got side effects.

Just fucking try it. It's some drug that slightly has an effect on how your body processes Dht or whatever and may stop balding or at least slow it down. It won't destroy you, and if you feel like it does just stop taking it.

i took finasteride for 2 years, now have been on dutasteride (stronger version of fin) for 3 years. basically no side effects, just a little hornier. i think it's completely fine for most people.

My guess on it is that if you have a lot of androgen receptors in your body you'll be fine. But if you have a low amount/weak receptors it will fuck you up. Unfortunately you can't test your androgen receptor density as far as I know.

Some people claim it basically shuts down androgen receptor sites. One theory is that it can permanently shut down some. People given finasteride with hypertrophied hearts/lvh show improvement in heart function from finasteride. I wouldn't take it if your test is low or normal/you have a hard time gaining muscle.

it reduces dht in your body (rub it onto your scalp and it reduces it there hence less hair loss) and the side effects are mostly nonexistent due to dht not doing too much in your body. it has a high concentration in your prostate though so you might experience sexual side effects if at all

This is a good point, although I would also add CAG repeat length is a good predictor, of course most people will not have this information but I would suppose longer CAG repeats would mean a worse side effect profile from Fin, as those guys also tend to get hit harder by male menopause, are already less athletic, etc.
