"Mathematics" is not a job. Mathematician is, but academia really won't rank very high in the "best jobs" department unless you're the 1% that gets tenure and can then do whatever. Even then, those people get inundated with administrative tasks.

Probably a lot of those jobs will have people who studied mathematics.

At my bank, the data scientists usually stay up until 9 - 11 PM when in the middle of a sprint. I've even seen 2 AM for some of these people.
>Data Analyst
This is my job and I too get fucked in the ass in terms of work-life balance. 9 pm days are at least a once-a-week affair.
>Risk Analyst
I know some of them and they don't seem to be getting fucked in the ass as much. Work life balance seems much better.

also the whole field is morally bankrupt since they deal with data processing -> surveillance, personalized advertisements, spotting "hate" speech etc.

Say a you want to analyze massive amounts of consumer data from your company in order to make some strategic decision, like what is your chief demographic or some other fucking thing. You use data scientists.

The fact that Data science doesn't even require calculus, let alone analysis and topology and such, shows it is not a serious STEM degree and is not "mathy".

Companies don't generally hire people to be mathematicians, they hire people to apply math to their problems. Look for the applications that require lots of math and you'll find mathematicians doing it under other titles.

As much as data scientist? Definitely not. Anything north of 100k and you are a slave to your company. I don't know if the only reason DS got into that list is the money or because the people in that field don't need their work-life balance anyways so they perceive it as "good". I think any job where you can't just leave at 5 pm does not have work-life balance. You work first, and take care of your life after you are done putting down the fires in your company.
