Why are infinite stairs possible in 2d but not 3d, when 3d has more dimensions to make stuff happen?

The 2d infinite stair images are exploiting the perspective adjustments our brains make see a flat 2d picture as a 3d "space". If we could see in 4d, then you could probably make a 3d printed "infinite" staircase

I'm fundamentally confused about this extra dimension business. What're saying there's another dimension? I've read flatworld, I know that it's incomprehensible. Yet I am still not convinced. I understand it makes sense mathematically, but that's not doing it for me either.
