This is not to say that there are no chemicals mroe explosive than it but harnessing such caliber of controlled explosions would need major modifications in the current gunsmitting tech.
Gauss and Railguns are promising and should produce the same damage as ordinary bullets however, they do require a huge amount of power and heat sinking technology. Electric weapons are known to overheat their circuitries due to the sheer amount of electricity. And this is not including the fact that with that much electricity in the air, the atmospheric conditions must always be taken into considerations. And even if the weather is dry, if there are a lot of you firing at the same time, the surrounding static electricity can break the dielectric breakdown of the air and electrocute all of you.
Lasers go on the same field as power consumption aside, using light waves as a weapon would also mean that you are very susceptible to environmental factors. Rain, dust, fog, etc can all wreck havoc on your effective range
