How does gene store psychology information?

We are all somewhat afraid of the dark, society didn’t teach us that. We also more or less agree on which other humans are beautiful, it isn’t subjective. We all somewhat suffer from the spotlight effect.

Our genes don’t only store our phenotype, do they? How is evolutionary psychology transmitted to decedents?

My bad, I wasnt clear enough in my question.
I'm asking HOW? I can understand a gene translating into a protein but how does a gene expression translate into a psychology trait?

Genes code for proteins which build the organism
We don't currently know how exactly genetics shapes the brain.
If we did we would be much better at building brains in vitro

how come a science board, with SUPPOSEDLY well read people is filled with these midwits. how about you use your head for once?

OP, physical traits IS psychology. lower body mass and lower body fat percentage creates introspective individuals. denser bones create brutes. personality, as complex as it may be, is just the interplay of reject/attraction patterns on what the body feels is capable to withstand. this knowledge is available to the to the human individual just days after birth, and then and after it just reinforces, or modulates, but the physical substract will always decide.

it's stored like everything else, there are some set of genes that create a neural structure such that we have a fear of darkness/particular sense of beauty/etc. i'm not sure what you're actually asking or trying to imply, and i'm not sure why this would be any different than, say, why do we have five fingers, or wide hips

think of veins: our vasculature is extremely complicated, it bifurcates at a bunch of points seemingly at random, hundreds of thousands of times. which is easier to store: every single point where something should bifurcate, or to encode a rule that says "when x condition is met, bifurcate"?

the study of genes and their relationship to the mind/behavior is very complicated for a number of reasons, and among those is that these rules interact with each other across time.

meaning, that you don't typically have a "be afraid of the dark" gene, instead you have a bunch of genes, and these genes tend to create structures that, over time, following their own rules, and given a proper environment, give rise to neural structures that have a sensation of fear when they are signalled that there is darkness.

so, a mutation occurs in some gene, a proper environment is experience, a new rule is made, and this rule ends up shaping a new neural structure that creates a behavior. the behavior turns out to be beneficial (or at the very least, it isn't harmful), and is then passed on to offspring.

It's true the brain is plastic, but it's not a blank slate. These are different ideas. To use an art metaphor, your genes/environment determine what you're drawing on and what you're drawing with. So sure, you draw whatever you want, but it'll only be with 4 specific colors, only on a specific sort of surface, only a particular sized brush, etc.

Yeah not all parts of the brain are fully plastic, intact there's a lot of developmental psychology work on what parts are instinct and what parts come from the environment

Traits are a combination of genetics and environment.

Let look at a simpler case like caffeine addiction. Some people have a genetic trait that makes them much more susceptible to caffeine addition (genetic). While other people want to hang with friends who frequent coffee shops or drink energy drinks to help them work longer hours to make ends meet and with habitual exposure develop an addiction (environment). In both cases the trait of caffeine addition will emerge.

Now lets look at something a little more abstract like aggression. A persons family has cases of emotional instability and rage, one such cause could be genes failing to regulate hormones or neural chemistry in the same manner as most people (genetic). While others my live in a hostile environment where aggression improves their living standards or is a result of stress induced emotional instability (environment).

Keep going and you find complex correlations all over the place. From there it is not hard to assume genetics have an influence on psychology that could lead to similar outcomes under similar conditions. But one needs to be careful as that could change if we had very different conditions. Some of these environment changes can be unbelievable, like how I "cured" myself of clinical depression. I think generally speaking human genetic are well programmed, with a lot of built in adaptability to aid us in ways we don't even realize.

What trait are you thinking of? I may not know the exact science, but I am good at connecting dots with my reasoning skills.

Not sure how do they decide addiction susceptibility is genetic. Seems as really hard thing to me. Have some spare eye openers for skeptic?

It has something to do with how the genes dictate how the body handles specific chemicals. Similar to lactose intolerance is regulated buy the amount of enzyme the body makes and that enzyme level is dictated by genetics. So I see that same thing happening for all kinds of chemicals, the body is basically a giant chemical engine programmed by our genes after all. Although that is not to say we can't mess with it in other ways.

I don't know where they draw the line as it is looks more like a sliding scale kind of thing. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (aka DSM) might help define it better as it get cited for these kind of things. I think they get around that a bit by defining it as having a 'negative impact'. I am sure there is some more detailed work on more popular addition like alcoholism. After all doctors keep saying alcoholism runs in the family and other descriptions, which sound like genetics even to the untrained.

So in theory by the DSM definition (as I understand it), a person could have a heavy addiction, but if they can support the addiction to the level that it doesn't significantly harm their life then medically they might not define it as an addiction as their life style is not negatively impacted. Like say they get pass-out drunk all the time, but they don't miss work, keep the marriage happy, and the harm to their liver take their above average liver down to an average health, so overall they might not qualify as alcoholic despite being an alcoholic.
