Are there any scientific methods to determine who will be a good student? It seems like GPA + admission interview fails often.

Yeah but when it comes to science, that stuff matters less. My point is that it's easy to pass interviews with charisma and a bit of practice in fooling HR-type people. There's gotta be a better systematic way of assess future performance.

This, really, and I'd add any relevant personal projects or other kind of experience.

IQ test to make sure the required brain hardware is there
Personality test to make sure ambition and a good work ethic are present
Personal projects and experience to adjudicate between two similar profiles.

This was coming from far away. History is full of people clamoring for the position and status of ruling class. If you're asking for a scientific method on how to get the best students then you're missing the entire point into why these universities continually have to include more and more and more.

MIT has been actively trying to "diversify" their student body for the past years (some say after 2015). The result of that is that while they still take academic superstars (IMO medalists, IOI medalists etc.) their student body are also made up of people who aren't exactly there in terms of academic capabilities. MIT is also nowhere as hard as some may claim, sure there are definitely ways for you to get a very rigorous education there but most students who can't take the rigor simply choose easy ways out, and MIT provides a lot of those easy ways.

MIT is still a great school, but it is no longer a meritocracy which is why its students turn out to be complete idiots. The only school I have respect for in the US is Caltech, not to say any other schools are necessarily bad, but Caltech is as far as I am aware the last and only meritocracy of STEM. It also does not offer easy ways out and thus forcing all its students to go through a very rigorous education. There are definitely relatives there, but I think the analogy of "Caltech is like the top ten percent of MIT" is pretty fair.

I've served on admissions committees for graduate and med programs and there really isn't one thing, much less anything that is quantitative. Institutions are now starting to grow skeptic of test scores and even GPA can be dubious when you consider how many schools have bad grade inflation (Ivy league schools are notorious for this). One-on-one interviews are probably the most instrumental in gauging how brilliant or hard working a prospective student is because you can hide a lot on a CV.

The science says the exact opposite. Interviews where admissions teams use unstructured tests, based on 'intuition', are literally worse than random.

Indeed, I am not saying that MIT is not rigorous because of that. Personally I think MIT is more rigorous than any other university in the US in terms of STEM except Caltech. MIT courses are still hard, just that they aren't the old academic superstar playground it used to be. Its student population is a lot less capable now (due to their efforts to no longer just look at academic capabilities). But hey, at least it isn't doing the same crap Stanford is doing.

Stanford does this "heterogenous" student population thing, basically it means that they care more about you being quirky than you being academically competent. I mean, pretty much all schools do this but Stanford takes it to the next level. I know a kid (Asian male) who applied for the computer science major at Stanford who had no computer science experience, no nontrivial awards and barely any extracurricular about comp sci. The thing that got him in was underwater photography. Yes, fucking underwater photography for a comp sci major. I mean sure he also had a decent GPA (disregarding his freshman year, but Stanford is one of the schools that don't look at freshman grade), and he had a good SAT score. But everyone has a good SAT score.

Nope. Have you ever tried applying to CMU CS? The reason why when I applied I didn't even bother with unis like CMU for their cs program is because they require me to actually have things for computer science. I didn't, I only had mathematic awards. The best CS programs require computer science experience (awards, projects etc. You need something to show that you are already outstanding), at least from Asian male applicants. URMs can probably get away with fair stats and mediocre extracurriculars to show their interest.
